Description ICPSR advances and expands social and behavioral research, acting as a global leader in data stewardship and providing rich data resources and responsive educational opportunities for present and future generations.
Organisation An international consortium of more than 700 academic institutions and research organizations, ICPSR provides leadership and training in data access, curation, and methods of analysis for the social science research community.
ICPSR is a unit within the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan and maintains its office in Ann Arbor.
Type of service Storage facility
Legislation United States
Usage and appreciation ICPSR maintains a data archive of more than 500,000 files of research in the social sciences. It hosts 16 specialized collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields.
The Consortium was established in 1962.
Support organisation ICPSRUser Support. ICPSR staff are available to answer questions about downloading and using data.

Data classification Klasse 3 voor openbare informatie, Klasse 2 voor interne informatie [voor een beperkte groep], Klasse 1 voor vertrouwelijke c.q. geheime informatieThe vast majority of ICPSR data holdings are public-use files with no restrictions on their access. Sometimes the protective measures taken to reduce disclosure risk would significantly reduce the research potential of the data. In these cases, ICPSR provides access to restricted-use versions that retain confidential data by imposing stringent requirements for accessing them.

Data at ICPSR are screened for confidentiality and privacy concerns. Stringent protections are in place for securing and distributing sensitive data.
Identifying information should be removed from the data to protect confidentiality.

Classification of the service
Availability Worldwide Dissemination. ICPSR offers data in the major statistical package formats and online analysis. Usage statistics are available on request.
Integrity ICPSR stores, curates, and provides access to scientific data so others can reuse the data and validate research findings.
Confidentiality Deposits are made using a secure data deposit form to describe the data collection and upload content.
Accepted metadata formats Documentation files are integral to interpreting a data collection and should thoroughly explain the data collection. Examples of documentation files include codebooks, data collection instruments, summary statistics, project summaries, and bibliographies of publications pertaining to the data. Documentation can be submitted as Microsoft Word, ASCII, and DDI XML files, among other formats. Documentation that has the question text integrated with variable information is preferred.DDDI
Accepted content types
Accepted preferred formats ICPSR encourages depositors to submit data files as SAS, SPSS, or Stata files. ASCII files are also acceptable as long as they are accompanied with setup files. Datasets in other formats are accepted as well.
Each variable in the data collection should have a set of exhaustive, mutually-exclusive codes. Variable labels and value labels should clearly describe the information or question recorded in that variable. Missing data codes should be defined.
Accepteerde file formats
Maximum size of deposits
Version management No
Quality control After a data collection is deposited at ICPSR, a data archivist reviews the data and documentation, builds a study description, enhances the documentation, approves the data collection for distribution on the ICPSR website, and archives the data for long-term preservation.
Access requirements Levels of Access. Open Acces, ICPSR offers restricted access data services, and a secure data enclave. For selected restricted-use datasets, ICPSR utilizes Restricted SDA (Survey Documentation & Analysis), an online statistical package that evaluates output for disclosure risk prior to displaying it for the end user. Restricted SDA is programmed to disable access to the microdata and selected variables, evaluates dataset-specific thresholds, and logs user interactions so that usage can be monitored.
Tools / Interfaces for access Aggregation of Publications. ICPSR creates a database of citations based on analyses of your data. This database is harvested by social science indexes, such as the Web of Science, which also provides credit to the original investigator.

Preservation strategy The most comprehensive digital preservation policy for ICPSR's digital preservation program is the ICPSR Digital Preservation Policy Framework. This high-level policy document was approved internally at ICPSR and by the ICPSR Council in June 2007. https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/datamanagement/preservation/policies/dpp-framework.html
